What are Enterprise Zones?

Budget 2011 announced that Goverment would establish 21 new Enterprise Zones in LEP areas.

Enterprise Zones are a powerful expression of the Government's pro-growth agenda; allowing areas with real potential to create the new businesses and jobs that they need, delivering positive benefits across the wider economic area.  The core offer for businesses in the Zone is around simplified planning and business rates discounts, with Zones having the potential to develop innovative solutions to address the specific local economic challenges.

Aerohub Newquay

We led a successful bid to create an Enterprise Zone around Newquay Cornwall Airport encouraging businesses within the aerospace industry to locate there and spawning opportunities for other supporting businesses. Only LEPs, on behalf of their partners, were able to bid for an Enterprise Zone.  LEPs as business led partnerships with a goal of driving sustainable economic growth across local economic areas, are ideally placed to drive Enterprise Zones forward.

Successful zones have the opportunity to attract investment, developments and jobs through a combination of business rate discounts worth up to £275,000 over five years for each business in the zone, simplified planning procedures and superfast broadband links.

With Cornwall Council, we explored the possibility of creating enterprise zones in other areas, in preparation for when legislation allow further enterprise zones to be established.

  • The Aerohub @ Newquay Cornwall Airport is expected to deliver over 700 jobs in aerospace and a further 375 in the wider economy in the next 5 years.

The application to develop this was approved by Government in August 2011.
